SET UP PERSON FOR JAMES BAY MARKET – 2017 Season: Applications open until Feb. 28th, 2017

Our Market is located at the Corner of Menzies and Superior in James Bay and operates from 9 am to 3 pm every Saturday rain or shine from the beginning of May to the end of September. Our vendors (60) consist of a mix of farmers, food producers, food vendors and crafters. Our customer base consists of a mixture of local James Bay residents and visitors to Victoria. We are seeking a person/persons to work with our Market Manager but independently of same.

This is a split shift contract position (morning and afternoon) beginning at the end of April, every Saturday May to September rain or shine and ending in early October.

  • Must be physically fit – able to lift up to 11Kg (25 lbs), quick moving and able to think under pressure
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must be available every week or have a trained replacement
  • Must have the ability to get along well with others
  • Van or truck an asset but not mandatory
  • A brief description of the position follows:

    Signage

    The placement of our 19 Market Signs using zap straps (all but one are approximately 24 x 32 inches in size) at designated locations in James Bay, either on telephone poles or sign posts. Note the sign placement may vary to accommodate special events such as Cruise Ship arrivals. These should be placed early evening/late afternoon on Friday night or early Saturday Morning (before 8 am) and the removal of same after the Market on Saturday. Sign placement takes approximately 40 – 50 minutes, removal and return to storage approximately 30 minutes. Three small signs are placed on the Market site on Friday afternoon/evening and removed after the Market.

    The Setup of the Market on Saturday (this takes approximately 1 ½ to 2 hours)

    The removal from our storage shed located approximately 175 meters (570 feet) from our Market Site of all of our Market equipment and the moving of same to our location at Menzies and Superior and the securing of the shed.

    The placement of all the equipment and supplies (majority of which are stored in Rubbermaid bins), the erection of our 5 tents, placement of our visitor tables and chairs, the setup of our music equipment including our gasoline electrical generator, our children’s area and our coffee/info area including the placement of the equipment and the initial preparation of the coffee including the transport of two large urns of water and our visitor refuse/recycling containers.

    Small tasks which include the roping off with banners a portion of the Market and other tasks that present themselves ie putting up banners on the Market tents, placement of sandwich boards etc. correct placement of extension cords from our music and coffee areas to the gasoline electrical generator and its startup and operation. Plus other tasks that may present themselves.

    At Markets end (3:00 pm) all the equipment is to be returned to the Market Shed. This takes approximately 1 ½ hours. The placement of the equipment in a neat and tidy manner with emphasis on the order of removal for the next Market is critical.

    Prior to the start of the first Market and at the end of the market season a general cleanup of the equipment is required.

    Remuneration is $145 per week payable every two weeks. Prior to initial job interview a formal job description will be forwarded.
